Matmos

Matmos is M. C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel. Currently based in Baltimore, the duo formed in San Francisco in the mid 1990s, and self-released their eponymous debut album in 1997.

Marrying the conceptual tactics and noisy textures of object-based musique concrete to a rhythmic matrix rooted in electronic pop music, the two quickly are known for their highly unusual sound sources: amplified crayfish nerve tissue, the pages of bibles turning, water hitting copper plates, liposuction surgery, washing machines, chin implant surgery, contact microphones on human hair, rat cages, tanks of helium, a cow uterus, human skulls, snails, plastic objects, cards shuffling, laser eye surgery, whoopee cushions, balloons, latex fetish clothing, rhinestones, insects, life support systems, inflatable blankets, rock salt, solid silver ingots, the sound of a frozen stream thawing in the sun, a five gallon bucket of oatmeal. These raw materials are manipulated into surprisingly accessible forms, and often supplemented by traditional musical instruments played the group’s large circle of friends and collaborators.

Dr. Drew Daniel is an associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of English Literature and Schmidt is a homemaker.

Their most recent album is entitled The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises in Group Form, and was released on Thrill Jockey Records In August of 2020. It involves 99 collaborators and it’s tempo is entirely at 99 Beats per Minute and is around 3 hours long.

A good introduction might be here, with a video made entirely by Matmos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S71q3vNBK4E

If you’d like to talk to them, they are on twitter at @lordmcess for Schmidt and @DDDrewDaniel for Daniel.

Jeff Carey

Jeff Carey makes synthetic noise music with an physically controlled software based instrument of his own development called ctrlKey. His music is abstract and sculptural, full of shapes and gesture, colored by noise bursts, percussive glitches and shifting resonance. In recent work, he has incorporated lighting projection to explore the space between visceral and the external embodiment of sound. He builds physically controllable custom software synthesis instruments and is interested in exploring immediate and flexible sound production with virtuosity in electronic music.

"He's acting on raw instinct here - he refuses the clinical approach to programming software or composing music, and strives to throw himself bodily at his machines, replacing all mechanical moving parts with human flesh, blood, and bone. In pursuit of this all-organic goal, virtually everything else is jettisoned, starting with recognizable notes or melody." – Sound Projector magazine editor Ed Pinsent

He is an active member of Baltimore's music scene. He organizes local concerts for touring electronic musicians and is a co-curator of the High Zero Festival for improvised and experimental music and for the Diffusion Festival for electronic multichannel music.

Bromp Treb

Neil Young aka Neil 'Cloaca' Young is an artist who makes sounds, images, events and occasionally, objects.

An active improviser and collagist, Young's output takes many forms as experimental cinema, audio recordings, compositions and performances - utilizing a variety of tools and media such as percussion, electroacoustic synthesis, coding, magnetic tape, video and celluloid film.

A musician with no formal training but years of experience as a percussionist and noisemaker, Young has developed an open, physical and idiosyncratic approach to any instrument, device or recording method he uses.

Currently, Young has been playing percussion in an improvising quintet Gloyd, experimenting with electro-acoustic speaker synthesis in a duo called Carbus, and trying everything with his solo noise/rhythm project as Bromp Treb. His longest-running collaboration with noise rock weirdos Fat Worm of Error remains on indefinite hiatus. Young can also be found improvising in other ad hoc ensembles as opportunities arise.

His audio recordings can be found in circulation on many labels such as Feeding Tube, Load, Ecstatic Peace!, Ultraeczema and on his own imprint Yeay! Plastics.
